Elements and principles of design are applied to practical projects that include identity and branding, multi-page collateral, packaging and web/interactive projects. Guided by instructors who are working design professionals, students learn skills to excel in the real world. Digital and traditional techniques are used to solve graphic problems with an emphasis on conceptual thinking, socially responsible design and strategy. The program culminates in a professional portfolio that can be used to continue studies to a four-year university or obtain employment.

When I started the program at City College I was expecting to gain enough skills to create a portfolio that would hopefully land me a job as a designer. What I was not expecting, and what I got, was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. The instructors are not only talented and accomplished, but they were, and still are, invested in my success. Currently a Creative Director at Facebook, Josh oversees a multidisciplinary team of art directors, writers, filmmakers and engineers who communicate and build the Facebook brand. The Design Director of President Obama’s 2012 campaign he built and led this historic campaign in which the web, design and technology played a pivotal role. With roots in graphic design and advertising Josh’s work has earned him national honors. Josh dedicates a percentage of his time to social causes supporting them with exhibits and charitable projects like the Hurricane, So-Cal and Haiti poster projects.
Chris Do is an Emmy award winning designer, founder and CEO of Blind, Inc., a transmedia agency located in Santa Monica California where he oversees the creative and strategic direction of the company. He serves on the board and is an advisor for organizations like AIGA/LA and the Emmys Motion & Title Design Peer Group. Prior to forming Blind, he worked at Cole & Weber, Seattle as an Art Director, Epitaph Records as a designer and freelance designer at broadcast design firm, Novocom and R/GA LA under Kyle Cooper on main titles such as The Island of Dr. Moreau, Celtic Pride and Eraser.
Working as the Senior Designer for Chronicle Books in San Francisco, Amy created a broad range of books and products. She spearheaded and managed conceptualization and development of new product publishing and partnered with key editorial and sourcing personnel. As manager of the Children’s Design Fellowship program she trained and mentored fellows. She is the designer of the 2014 Caldecott Honor Book Flora and the Flamingo awarded by the American Library Association. As a product designer for Michael’s stores she brings distinctive and trend-right product design to Michael’s exclusive Recollections brand line.
YOUNG READING ROOM
At San Diego City College we believe in books. In 2014 we moved into the stunning new Arts and Humanities building, secured a grant and created a resource library of 3500 art and design books. The Young Resource Room honors a dedicated teacher Doyald Young who won the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal. An American typeface designer and teacher, Young specialized in the design of logotypes, corporate alphabets, and typefaces. This master designer visited City College often, to lecture, bring books and wisdom to share with students eager to learn. Now the Young Reading Room collection fuels aspiring creative minds and the community.
